Excited to volunteer for London 2012

Saturday 28 January 2012

Dear Friends,

I want to share a very good piece of personal news with you. I’ve been offered the chance to be "Games Maker" on the athletics team at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

I am thrilled with this opportunity and know it will be a once in-a-lifetime experience. You can bet I will be telling all my colleagues about the community and getting them to register their hours.

I applied for a volunteer position back in September 2010, almost two years before the Games. In April 2011, I was interviewed via phone.

I was surprised that most of the questions focused on my personality, rather than my background as an athlete. Eventually I did get why they were so interested my people skills and personality traits rather than my vocational skills and experience: at the end of the day, that’s what the Games are all about – forging new friendship and enjoying this festival of humanity.

I did not hear back from the organisers until this week. I am still waiting to know if I will get an opportunity to volunteer at the Olympic Games as well. I hope to get information from them shortly.

Have you been contacted? Or are you still waiting to get a role?

I wish you all the success. And do share it with the community when you hear from the Games Maker Team of the London 2012 Organising Committee.

Best regards,

Pierre

I'm attending the test event next weekend. First chance to see the stadium - hopefully I'll get inside but I am working in first call so won't see much!
